My thoughts on Paw Paw Schools’ recent vote to keep their racist mascot...
“Ouch! That hurts. You are standing on my foot.”
“Oh my. I didn’t mean to hurt you.”
“Well, I am glad you didn’t mean to. But it still hurts my foot. So will you get off now, please?”
“But I really like standing in this spot. I swear I don’t mean to hurt your foot.”
“Well there are lots of great spots to stand. You could just choose a spot without anyone’s foot in it and stand there.”
“I really like it right here. I think you should learn to live with me standing on your foot. See… it doesn’t hurt anymore, does it?”
“Actually, it does still hurt.”
“Yeah… but imagine if I had cleats on or was stomping on your foot. That would really hurt. This isn’t so bad, is it?”
“Yes, it still hurts. I am telling you it hurts. Why aren’t you removing your foot?”
“Can’t you take it as a compliment that I want to stand right here on your foot?”
“No. It hurts.”
“Well… I am still going to stay here. Even though there are other great spots to stand and even though you have told me it hurts. This is where I always stand so I am just going to stay right here in this spot. I still can’t believe you are not honored to have me stand on your foot. I have stood on other people’s feet and they have never complained this much.”
“THIS HURTS AND I AM ASKING YOU TO GET OFF MY FOOT!”
“Nope.”
